Since its inception in 1979, PROUD (People’s Responsible Organisation of United Dharavi) has spearheaded transformative changes in Dharavi, turning challenges into opportunities through dedicated, Non-violent Mass-mobilizations and  other various peaceful community-driven initiatives. Here are some of our notable achievements:

 

1. Access to Drinking Water:

Before PROUD’s intervention, accessing clean drinking water in Dharavi was a daily struggle, with few taps controlled by slum-lords. Through non-violent mass mobilizations and advocacy, PROUD successfully pressured local authorities to install the first drinking water taps in Social Nagar, paving the way for similar installations across other areas of Dharavi.

 

2. Prevention of Forceful Evictions:

In the face of frequent forceful evictions threatening the stability of Dharavi’s residents, PROUD stood firm. By 1990, our efforts led to a government assurance against forceful evictions in Dharavi. This milestone marked the beginning of slum upgradation, improvement, and redevelopment schemes aimed at securing housing rights for the community.

 

3.Environmental Justice:

PROUD took proactive steps to tackle environmental hazards. For instance, when the Damber (asphalt) company in Mukund Nagar posed health risks due to smoke and dust emissions, our advocacy and tactful actions forced its closure, safeguarding the health of local residents.

 

4. Community Infrastructure:

When essential infrastructure was lacking, PROUD advocated for critical facilities. For instance, when the government proposed a fire station in Subash Chandra Bose chawl, our advocacy redirected resources towards constructing much-needed community toilets. This initiative prevented accidents caused by residents crossing highways for basic needs.

 

5. Protection of Community Spaces:

PROUD safeguarded communal living spaces from evictions. For instance, when a Govt. School was planned in Azad Nagar, which was home to over 250 families, our advocacy and social actions ensured the protection of their homes and livelihoods, preserving community cohesion and stability.

 

These achievements are a testament to PROUD‘s commitment to democratic, non-violent, and community-centric approaches in addressing socio-political and civic challenges in Dharavi.
